Recent updates

There are currently four Fortnite character markers that haven't been activated yet, but from May 22 you'll be able to recruit a Heavy, Scout, Supply, or Medic Mandalorian which should fill in those blanks.

The line up of Fortnite characters has received a boost, though it's a somewhat confusing one at this stage in the Galactic Battle season. Five more character markers have been added to the Collections map, but so far only one of them has actually been activated in the game, with Jar Jar Binks making an appearance in the middle of the island – we'll have to wait for the others to roll out in future weeks. If you're looking for Chewbacca then you need to search Fortnite Outposts to find him fighting with Stormtroopers, and if you help him defeat them he'll join you as a Medic Specialist for the rest of the match.

This gives us a total of nine characters to find across the island, with four more to be added later, and while the number of NPCs is low a lot of them are in close proximity to each other, which means there are some large areas of the map that currently aren't covered. Interact with any of them you meet to receive useful items and have the chance to purchase hard-to-find weapons, as well as being able to invest in services to get a competitive edge over your rivals.

In a throwback to previous seasons characters are once again responsible for handing out certain Story Fortnite quests, so it still pays to know their locations. They'll also give you useful items for free when you meet, as well as selling services such as healing your injuries, or predicting where future storm circles will form. If you want to benefit from their abilities, then you'll need to know where to find these nine different NPCs.

Fortnite characters accept payment in the form of Fortnite gold bars, which you can spend with them on weapons, items, and useful services. Because the world of Fortnite is so large you might not stumble upon them by accident, so follow my guide to all of the Fortnite characters locations and you'll be meeting up with these elusive NPCs in no time.

There are currently nine official Fortnite characters, and you can keep track of the ones you've met so far by visiting the Characters tab on the Quests screen in-game – which is also accessible through the Collections option under the Quests tab in the lobby. They currently only spawn in one specific location each meaning no roaming characters, so I've marked all of the Fortnite characters locations I've encountered on the map. Bear in mind that if another player has hired or eliminated them, that will remove the character from their location.

You'll know when you're close to one as you'll see a speech bubble or clue icon on your map, as well as on your screen above their head which you can see through walls – this is replaced with a specific Hire icon for characters you can recruit to fight by your side. Interact with them and the first time you meet you'll add them to your Collection, with a confirmation appearing on screen. This list shows where all of the Fortnite characters can be discovered:

  • 1) Wookiee Team Leader - Masked Meadows (middle)
  • 2) General Grievous - north of Rogue Repairs (northeast of Masked Meadows)
